GlobalWarming and Climate Change} When you come across limestone in nature, You are seeing past life!
When I first started school, in a small town where there where 28 students in K-8th we were taught about past life on the planet. Dinosaurs were always a big hit, and then oil, coal, I remember a film about dinosaurs in animation and as they died their bodies would turn into oil, and an oil well would pump the oil out of the ground and cars would drive up fill up with oil and gas, and away they would go, running on millions of years old dead dinosaurs. Well, I am pretty sure most of us now know that was not quite correct! But it did explain how oil, gas, coal, peat, shale, are all past life. And we have been digging, pumping, drilling, for this past life as fast as we can, to fuel our lives. Just a very small fraction of past life was made into these convenient forms of fuel. Most past life has always been recycled millions and maybe billions of times into new life and still being recycled today, but every year a tiny, tiny, tiny amount is removed from being recycled! A tiny amount ends up as the fuels we use today, some are washed down into the oceans, and buried deep in the rivers delta cover by mud unable to be returned to the carbon cycle for a very long time, if ever, but the largest amount of carbon that is locked away from the carbon cycle is bound up in new sedimentary rock formation, with time and with pressure this carbon is transformed into limestone or other similar types of rock. The Planet (what most call Earth) has had life in abundance for around 3 Billion years, would we be able to recognize our past planet if we saw it? Almost no chance, and we could not have lived on it with-out space-suits! And even then we would have possibly been squashed like a bug under the weight of the atmosphere! That atmosphere was composed of mainly carbon dioxide, and methane, as are most planets in the solar system. Over the following 3 eons or so the Planet has completely changed, almost anything that could live back at the beginning of "abundant life" could never survive at this time, and anything alive now could not survive back then, maybe deep in the oceans around black smokers "life" may not have changed as sunlight has no bearing on that life, and the energy that is needed for that life does not seem to come from above but that would be the "exception to the rule that proves the rule"! The very fact that life on this "Planet" has changed, proves that life needed to be able to adapt to a slowly, slowly, changing environment. The three major needs that we know have been changing over this time frame, are sunlight, water, and atmospheric density and gas concentration! Sunlight has been increasing in intensity by around 10% per billion years, Mankind always looked at water availability, as only concerning the land, but 71% of the planet is water, mainly salt water, and as of now in time I have very little information on freshwater and its availability over the remaining 29% of the surface of the planet, over the last 3 Billion years. But how the atmosphere has changed, can be very roughly calculated by what and how much material that would have once been in it, is now locked away by sequestration. Keep reading and thinking, there is so much that I am sure I am missing, and many minds can be better than one!
