227 Global Warming and Climate Change} "The Placebo Effect"
I think of the "Placebo Effect" as when a person in a white coat gives a sugar pill to someone telling them that this pill is an improved version of some super medication! And for about 30% of the population of the planet, it seems to work, for pain, anxiety, depression, and it can even help with substance abuse problems. For me, it means that how we perceive something can or may make a large difference in an outcome. Can a Placebo work, yes and no, it is in itself, only an acceptable perception of an outside power that your own body has the ability to either overcome or repair itself. If you take the medical aspect out of the "Placebo Effect" it can explain much of how our own perceptions can be influenced by the "sales pitch" of whatever is being put forth. You start with the idea of whether or not you trust the salesman, if so then the conviction that they put forth can influence your own conviction and once you have invested part of your own belief in an opinion, then it becomes more important that future ideas seem to fall in-line with the original concept, In this way, whether we are talking about a brand, such as Ford, or a company such as Johnson & Johnson, a base is developed that will be very solid behind a new product. Much of life is like this, in places in the world that everything good can only come from a benevolent power structure, such as a tribal leader, then nothing good can come from not placing your future in their hands, a need to believe in the goodness of their leadership is very important. Otherwise, why live at all if you are only serving a known, bad leader? Bad leaders can not go around and do or say things that everyone knows are wrong, so they have to find a justification for their actions. This has been done though-out history, and has always been blamed on the "others sides" who want to take power for themselves, and many times it has been change, that the ones in power dislike the most. Ever since advertising has been used to influence buying habits, whether we are talking about material goods, or political points of views, the ability for mankind to make decisions based on facts, has been lost, It is now based on who can spin there, money based point of view, the best. Then the next step was taken, out and out, lies on the internet, not only can a random person, company, or government, make any statement it wants, it can spin these statements to make anybody believe anything, with absolutely no consequences even if found out! Why have we allowed this to happen, and it is we that did allow this to happen, when "yellow Journalists" started up with papers that told out and out lies, why did we buy their products making it very profitable to lie? When something is printed that can be proved false, we must react with punishments, if not for the writer if they were misled, but very hard on the "source". This must be true, for everyone that knowingly provides such information, but this must not hinder discussions of different opinions! Many points of view in this world are not based on proven facts, and that is okay, there are so many different religions on the planet and all have faith as their "proven fact" usually a very old text that explain why they believe what they believe. Almost all believe that being a "good person" is much better than being a "bad person", many do have an eye for an eye analogy, but for the most part live and let live is the most widely held belief. And almost all have an extremist element as some of their followers, for them it is "my way or the highway". The "Placebo Effect" for them is at the extreme edges of socially acceptable behavior. Since the "Placebo Effect" only works if a person believes in it, that makes it extremely hard to persuade them of any other belief, or course of action. The 30% that feels the need to believe in something, or someone, or some system, are also the ones who will get up on a soapbox, and shout out above anyone else, because there is always in the back of their minds that "what-if" they are wrong, how will they ever be able to be listened to again.
