CCLXVIII Global Warming and Climate Change} Let's go back to working the river deltas!
What are we trying to do with "mining the deltas?" The deltas were formed by the silts of many thousands of years of the river bringing the soils from far away In almost every case of the largest rivers on the planet, the water slows down as it comes to the sea or oceans that it empties into, this is not by luck that this happens but caused by the very silt that the rivers have been carrying, many times hundreds to thousands of miles. the river would have found the path of least resistance to the sea or ocean and if in the early years it ended on a cliff high above, the waters would have slowly eroded the surrounding land until it was level with the sea or ocean, then the waters would slow down, and that actions would have caused the heavy load of silt it has been carrying to precipitate out and slow the waters even more and backing up so that a delta would have started being formed, with no longer a single river entering into the sea or ocean but many smaller, fingers streams, but with much clearer water that it had been just a few day's earlier. This black gold is the secret ingredient for enriching the soils of the arid and semi-arid areas of the world. All of them long ago lost their organic matter, that is what plants need to flourish. Yes, most deltas have people living in and on such a rich and fertile area, but the soils there contain so much more organic matter 1000's of years deep, that we would need to find ways to mine so much life-giving soil with-out taking away others livelihood! Change is difficult in the best of times for most of mankind, how we would need to go about getting access to this black-gold (THIS BLACK GOLD IS WORTH MORE THAN OIL) will take a lot of thought, planning, and compromise on everyone's part! Is could end up being as simple as using the new silt from the now diverted river, to enrich enough of the nearest desert or semi-arid area for a new and better place to live and farm because of the higher elevation, and therefore less chance of flooding and much better control of insects, and diseases that they carry. With a guarantee, of both adequate water and soil if necessary, along with the buildings and homes to compensate for what was lost. Not only will doing this end up making more and much better farms, but it will also help with the public relations that will need to be kept at the highest and best levels to help in any negotiations as the "plan" goes forth. Many of the great rivers of the planet have arid and semi-arid areas close enough so that moving these vast amounts of water, while challenging, is not unlike other massive endeavors that mankind has already encountered. There is the greatest of all rivers where this is not true, The Amazon, its out-flow of water is almost 1/5th of all the freshwater that enters the oceans of the world, how would we go about keeping any of that freshwater from entering the Atlantic ocean so that it could be used for re-planting any arid or semi-arid areas of the planet?
