430 Why has it always been so hard to stop believing in nonsense? And why has we tried so hard to get people to believe in nonsense?
I loved the Harry Potter series, knowing full well that it was just great escape fantasy, as was The Lords of the Rings, before that. Even such series as The Earth Children's series about an orphaned child Alya that could have actually happened, based on scientific discoveries of our ancestors during the last ice-age, not actually the story itself but how knowledge was learned 25,000 years ago! But we use imaginary creatures, beliefs, on our children from a very young age, so how are they to tell facts from fiction? Does mankind even understand enough of how life works to know what is a fact? Even if we understand some things, how can we be sure that everything that we understand about something is completely correct! Do we even know enough about the red-light shift to determine distances in space correctly, maybe, maybe not? We believe that with our best telescopes that we can almost see far enough back in time to the "big bang" which is estimated at 14.6 billion years! The last 2 centuries have seen explosions of knowledge that make all of mankind's previous understanding seem like a child had been involved in it! Yet there are so many unexplainable prior civilizations that we are still finding out about, with lost knowledge on the how, why, and when, that we simply can only guess at. Yes, there are explanations based on labor done by large amounts of people, but we do not know if this is even possible let alone why such huge undertakings were ever started in the first place! To those that believe in the explanations given, that's fine and who knows perhaps people had such a need to believe in honoring the Gods or using giant stones to tell them when to plant (when much smaller even handheld devices would have worked just as well) Were tied together in these massive undertaking like we use football or some other team-driven endeavor to rally around.
Most parents like to instill a sense of wonder in their children, perhaps to capture a little of that wonder for themselves that they remember from their own childhood. Two hundred years ago story's were told to frighten children and people to encourage people from being different than the norm, if that did not work then people would be charged with witchcraft or heresy to force compliance, with what the people in charge considered acceptable behavior. Educating the populous changed much of that so now those same stories have become love stories, or stories of courage and sacrifice, or redemption. All of this confusing and baseless need to instill wonder, when just looking up into the sky at night should be able to instill wonder in anyone, or to keep innocence in our children, has lifelong consequences on why people are searching for something to hold on to. And this ends up for most of us getting married, having children, and working a 40-hour workweek for 45 years to either just survive, or to allow a peaceful retirement.
What this seems to add up to, is to doubt almost everything, can we trust others to tell us the truth, especially those in positions of power or authority? So the first question we ask when something is explained to us, is what is in it for those telling us, do they think a mass panic will result if they would have told us the truth? Will the economy suffer if people are scared? Or is there any good reason to tell the truth if nothing can be accomplished in doing so?
Education has made the most difference in people's lives, that is one of the reasons the government deemed it so important that it is mandatory for everyone up to a certain age to receive it! Yet at the same time, they tend to allow some things to be taught that are not known to be true, while keeping other things out of the curriculum that is widely accepted as truth. My wife is quite happy with our government not telling us many things, she believes that certain knowledge should never be told to the general population for many reasons. I on the other hand realize that without guidelines, mistruths and lies can therefore be used for personal gains by any number of individuals. That is why a free and open press is so important with any type of government that is on the planet!
