485 Let's talk about micro collection of water over ever acre or hectare of land after a rain!

     I live in Nebraska, in the middle of the United States of America. Growing up on a farm with two parents and 10 brothers and sisters. So I was quite aware of the erosion of soils from our fields after every heavy rain. My Father had the land terraced and created grass waterways to slow down the runoff and slow down erosion. but we could never stop it completely! So not only did we lose a little soil from each time it rained we also had water runoff that took that soil (always topsoil "the most fertile soil") and lost that water which, in Southeast Nebraska, was always in short supply! Had there been a way to collect all of that soil ladened water, just before it left my parent's property we could have enjoyed a better yield on our crops and maintained the land better for future generations of farmers!    

    While terracing land helps greatly in reducing water erosion, it does not stop it or prevent flooding, when you add up just how much soil erosion and water runoff within just one square mile of farmland and then times that over the whole planet, the figures are astounding! Europe, which has been farming for many years longer than America, has seen the worsening of their farmland if the necessary practices for maintaining soil quality are not followed! Yet even the best soil Management commonly practiced worldwide still is not consistent with generational needs! This is where a consistent collection of water run-off in every square mile of farmland must start being addressed. By creating places where water is collected and then returned as needed over a season present itself, also returning the soils that were removed can we create a sustainable farming practice at least in terms of soil and moisture, are concerned! 

   Whenever we are talking about water retention projects, we talk in terms of massive dams on existing river systems! while massive dams can be directly beneficial for flood prevention and consistent water flow in cities and towns. They fail when extreme rainfall or droughts happen! Creating micro-systems everywhere while still having the much larger systems downstream, (actually off the actual river flow, reduces problems for the native wildlife) creates a balance that can respond much better to these unusual events! 

   While the main focus of creating these, micro-water retention systems, is to prevent ongoing soil erosion and keep water in the area of the actual rainfall, the benefits can be greatly improved by creating another way to increase income using these water-holding systems for raising fish, and other aquatic life!

So many times humanity's attempts at creating sustainable ecological practices are either hit and miss or of only limited scope! Only by including every bit of farmland both for crops or animal feed can we begin to create sustainable agriculture far into the future! I understand that so many people feel that this should all be done inside greenhouses but that could never feed the necessary number of people when tragedy strikes!
